The Trouble Within

Our world has become smaller and we can easily exchange information with each other. That’s a context in which we can try to develop more compassionate attitudes among our seven billion fellow human beings. One thing we need to understand is that the real source of trouble for us all is not something outside us but something here within. It’s our feelings of suspicion, fear and anger that we really need to subdue.

Compassion Here And Now

We need to rely on common sense and common experience. It’s easy to see that if members of a well-off family don’t trust each other, they won’t be happy. On the other hand, when a family of beggars treat each other with affection, happiness comes easily. What we can learn from this is that never mind about future lives, we need compassion and warm-heartedness here and now in this life.

Cultivate A Compassionate Heart

Scientists say it’s basic human nature to be compassionate, which is good because if it were to be angry there’d be no hope. What’s more, scientists have observed that constant anger, fear, and hatred have the effect of undermining our immune system, whereas cultivating a compassionate heart is much better for our health. This is why it’s important that we use our brains to promote such values.

The Best Way To Help Yourself

Not only is it the case that happy people are more willing to help others, but as I generally point out, helping others is the best way to help yourself, the best way to promote your own happiness. It is you, yourself, who will receive the benefit.

We Should Evaluate Ourselves

The very purpose of spirituality is self-discipline. Rather than criticising others, we should evaluate and criticise ourselves. Ask yourself, what am I doing about my anger, my attachment, my pride, my jealousy? These are the things we should check in our day to day lives.
